Greetings from Southfield, MI

I wrote this yesterday before returning home from our Creative Summit at Mars Advertising headquarters in Southfield, MI. It was a great week of working with creatives from all over the country. Such an impressive organization!

It’s been a week people. For those who don’t know, I’ve been at our parent company, Mars Advertising’s corporate headquarters since Monday night for a creative summit. As the company grows and expands, they’ve started an initiative to rework culture and process to better serve our clients and produce the best possible products throughout the organization. That said, there is a need for creative staff to be on the same page. Unfortunately, that page exists in Eastern Michigan in the middle of January.

Truth be told, I haven’t spent more than a few minutes at a time outside since I’ve been here so really, the weather doesn’t matter. The meetings, however, have been awesome. Tuesday and Wednesday I was surrounded by a group of the most professional and talented creatives I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a room with. We even stuck to the agenda for the most part, atypical for creative types.

I’ve made some new friends, put a lot of faces on names I’ve phoned and I’m walking away today, inspired and ready to change the world. I’m most impressed with the capabilities we have as a functional whole. If the client wants it, we can do it… In House!

Now it’s time to get back and start putting this new found networking to work!

Happy New Year

Happy 2010! Coming to you live from Memphis, Tennessee, I figured I would post this while its fresh on my mind. To this point the weekend has been outstanding and we’ve only just begun. Yesterday, we shoved off from Northwest Arkansas, heading for a meet-up with friends in the home of the blues. Thanks to my lovely wife, we had tickets to Wild Side at the Peabody.

The show started up with Al Capone and was headlined by Saving Able. DJ Mark Anderson filled in the gaps and worked as a bit of an MC for the night. Needless to say, the show was killer. We arrived as Al Capone was finishing up… backed up by members of Saving Able in an awesome rap/rock mix. Saving Able played a killer set with all your favorites and a good time was had by all. The turnout was good and the best part was having a little shoulder room at the event. Lines were generally short for the bar and restrooms and the drinks didn’t break the bank. I’d definitely suggest this party to anyone next year. We finished the night at Blues City Cafe tamales and chili. Sooooo good.

Best part of the night? the limo in and out of the event. Since Memphis isn’t known for their cab service, the awesome front desk attendant set us up with a 15 passenger limo at $10/person plus tip. Cabs cost more. We split the ride with a group of Eastern Carolina (spit-spit) fans who are staying across the hall… but they are an entirely different post.

New Years Whrrl Story

Today we slept in (read ‘recovered’) for a bit and headed for Beale Street for lunch and the Liberty Bowl Parade. We had the pleasure of sharing lunch with Collective Bias’s own @BuckDaddy of href=”http://www.buckdaddyblog.com/” target=”_blank”>buckdaddyblog.com at Memphis Institution, B.B. Kings. Ryann had the salmon salad, buck had a burger, and I had my usual, the pork sandwich. Throw in some fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and a couple of buckets of beer and we were ready for the parade.

B.B. King’s Whrrl Story

The parade was great fun… if you’re completely at ease in freezing weather surrounded by crazed razorback fans. I had a blast, Buck seemed to have a great time and my lovely wife… well, lets just say she’s happy to be curled up under a blanket right now. Since Buck came from Memphis State, I mean, University of Memphis, it didn’t scare him too bad and I actually learned a lot about him as we dodged airborne beads and the random anti-Carolina sentiment.

Now we’re back in the suite, resting before a night out. The goal for the evening is Rayford’s then grab a couple of hours of sleep and we’re off to the tailgate party. Look out Pirates, we’re coming.

Bringing worlds together

partnershipSome of you might know that when I’m not working as creative director at Collective Bias, entertaining wife, kids, & dogs, or hiding in the woods, I’m working with the Social Media Club, Northwest Arkansas chapter. Yes, even my hobbies include social media… it’s an addiction, I know. This little volunteer job allows me the opportunity to network and hang out with some of the more entertaining people in my area as well as make valuable business connections and grow the impact of social media all over Northwest Arkansas. Recently I’ve had the honor of being included in two other local networking groups of equally motivated and fun people.

First was the MACC Initiative (Mothers & Companies Cooperating), led by Autumn Manning. The group is comprised of an impressive group of women who have made it their goal to excel both professionally and at home. Through sponsorships they’ve recently become officially non-profit and their numbers and influence are growing daily.

The second group is the Network Community of Northwest Arkansas. The group, led by Michael Mollitor meets monthly to network and welcome professional newcomers to the area. Michael told me that the group initially was started to fill a the void that most transplants to the area feel upon moving across the country to work near the “Big Three.” Their membership is large and they hold monthly meetings that see a fair number in attendance.

My group, the Social Media Club, Northwest Arkansas (SMCNWA), is part of the larger international club that’s chapters are committed to growing social media professionally and personally all over the world. I’m director of membership and do all I can to keep up with our president, Kyle Judkins, and two other directors, Collin Condray and Tom Redwine in expanding this goal to our area. We’ve got a good number of club members and tend to see a fair turnout at all our meetings and tweetups.

Now for the fun part… In January, we’re combining efforts to link the groups together if only socially to further each of our causes. Venue and exact time and date are still being verified but we anticipate upwards of 150 people in attendance. I’m really looking forward to bringing the groups together and seeing what we can do together. If you’d like to be a part of the event, contact me or anyone listed in this post. Its going to be a great night of conversation at a area restaurant and we’ll get the details ironed out early so you can track down a sitter if needed.

How we roll

BowlHerLogoI know, we’ve been talking about it for a while but it’s finally done. After hours of editing and countless video clips, Collective Bias, GNO, and One to One Network bring you the 2009 Bowlher video.

For those that missed it, enjoy the video and make plans to attend Blogher in New York next year. Who knows, you might just get your shot at all the fun. For those that made the show, keep a keen eye. You’re in there somewhere.

And the countdown continues…

Sands of TimeTruth be told it feels like it’s speeding up.  We’ve got roughly 28 days until the wedding and we’re both weeded to no end.  We’re getting things ironed out every day but the reality of our timeline is setting in.  There are just a few little things that would be noticeable if we didn’t get to them.  Like the cakes, do you think that anyone would really miss having cake at the wedding?  I mean, we will have booze, isn’t that enough?  No?  Alright, it’s still on the list.

Next we’ve got the issue of music.  This one doesn’t seem like it would take a long time but between work, getting kids fed and into bed and trying to go to the gym every once in a while, we’ve run out of time.  I’m taking the night off from all activities to see if we can’t work on this one a little.  The guy even gave us a form.  It’s just a matter of getting it done.

Next up, home repairs.  Seems we’re going to have a few people over at the house for a few days during the wedding and this means it’s the perfect time to get some minor plumbing issues taken care of… like putting the faucet back on the front bath.  A little while ago it decided to eject itself and I’ve yet to find the right kind of replacement.  Maybe I’ll have more luck tonight at Lowe’s.

Finally, we’ve got the issue of passports.  For those that don’t know, you need a passport these days to get in and, more importantly, out of Mexico.  That requires a birth certificate, driver’s license and a pile of money at your local post office to make a reality.  My experience was a little over $200 and well over 2 hours at the post office.  The good news is that it only took 6 days to get a new passport.  FMT might be pushing the deadline though.  Apparently her birth state is one of those still off the grid for online ordering of replacement certs.  Arkansas One, Connecticut Zero.  Now she’s gone third party to make it happen and it’s taking a bit longer than anticipated.  We’re staying positive though.  It’s going to happen on time. I know it is.

So beyond that, I haven’t really slept in a week or two now from a combination of new job/getting married/everything else but who’s really counting anymore.  I’m looking forward to the wedding as much as I’m looking forward to getting it over with and getting to Mexico.  I know it’s going to be a blast and everyone is going to have a great time… even if we don’t have cake.

Kidding…

Side Note:
This post would typically live on the wedding blog but I’m feeling like my personal blog is getting too business-like.  I want to bring back some of the old Jay stuff.  What do you think? Keep it segregated or bring back the mix? Post your thoughts below! I’m really curious what keeps people coming back.

BowlHer and the weekend in Chicago

To start, wow.  What’ a weekend!  For those that don’t know, Collective Bias flew @RyannFMT and me to Chicago for the end of BlogHer 2009 and the BowlHer event sponsored by Collective Bias, One to One Networks, and Mom it Forward.  Collective Bias, my new employer thought that the event would be a great opportunity for me to meet the bloggers as well as a few sponsors and brands so Friday, shortly after my exit interview from my previous employer, we loaded the car and hit it to Tulsa to join the party.

We arrived in Chicago just in time to catch a Hershey tweetup at the James hotel.  Very nice venue and the people were even better.  On a side note, Hershey Bliss is slap-yo-mama good… and you can quote me on that one.  From there we ran to the hotel, changed, made a pit-stop by the lobby bar at Hotel Sax and met up the Collective Bias group for a great dinner at Texas de Brazil.  See the pictures for a little insight into that evening.  The food was great (duh, who doesn’t like a constant parade of different meats coming to your plate via sword-service) and conversations ranged from the latest in social media tools to new product lines to hometowns.  Thanks to everyone for a great night.  We turned in fairly early on Friday night and it was definitely for the best.  I had been up since 6am and had a huge day ahead in setting up for BowlHer.

Saturday we were up with the early birds, enjoying an excellent breakfast at our hotel with about 1,000 other guests.  I parted ways with FMT and headed to a meeting-turned-search and rescue that moved smoothly and directly into BowlHer setup.  We broke around noon to have lunch at Gino’s East.  Yes the pizza takes a full hour to cook, but take a look at the pictures, classic Chicago pizza at its finest.  From there it was back to Lucky Strike for more setup.

Once we found a stopping point, FMT and I ran to the hotel for showers and 10 minutes of rest before running back to finish final set up and get ready to greet the bloggers.  BowlHer was an unmitigated success thanks to our gracious hosts and sponsors and all the wonderful mom bloggers.  Stories are still swarming around the blogsphere and twittersphere.  I encourage everyone to search your favorite social media tool and post comments with links to your favorite posts, pictures, and more.  Enjoy these pictures and look for a few more posts on my favorite new people!
