Greetings from Southfield, MI

I wrote this yesterday before returning home from our Creative Summit at Mars Advertising headquarters in Southfield, MI. It was a great week of working with creatives from all over the country. Such an impressive organization!

It’s been a week people. For those who don’t know, I’ve been at our parent company, Mars Advertising’s corporate headquarters since Monday night for a creative summit. As the company grows and expands, they’ve started an initiative to rework culture and process to better serve our clients and produce the best possible products throughout the organization. That said, there is a need for creative staff to be on the same page. Unfortunately, that page exists in Eastern Michigan in the middle of January.

Truth be told, I haven’t spent more than a few minutes at a time outside since I’ve been here so really, the weather doesn’t matter. The meetings, however, have been awesome. Tuesday and Wednesday I was surrounded by a group of the most professional and talented creatives I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a room with. We even stuck to the agenda for the most part, atypical for creative types.

I’ve made some new friends, put a lot of faces on names I’ve phoned and I’m walking away today, inspired and ready to change the world. I’m most impressed with the capabilities we have as a functional whole. If the client wants it, we can do it… In House!

Now it’s time to get back and start putting this new found networking to work!

Bring the Groove

escape-the-rut-and-embrace-your-lifeAs most of you know, the past few months have been at best, bedlam. With all the traveling, changing jobs, oh, and that wedding I had, I’m pretty much devoid of any sliver of what I used to do or be. Now the question is how to get back into the groove… or better yet, how do I make a new groove? Lets start there… and yes, I have a plan.

First, stop with all the weekend travel. It’s expensive and exhausting and its sucking up all my fun time. I’ve got a 4-wheeler I haven’t so much as cranked up in over a month, a yard that is about calf-deep in something with little purple flowers, and a garage that has gradually shrank by about 1/3 its size due to what needs to be stored or sold. My truck needs work, the house needs a pressure washing, and my better half I’m sure had a list the length of my arm of updates, upgrades, and general maintenance and repair for me. I need a few weekends at home to catch up.

Second, get organized and find that focus I used to have. This shouldn’t be too hard once step one has been instituted as household policy. Anyone have any pointers on organizing an entire house… scratch that… life? The Mrs. and I joke about picking up the house, shaking everything out the front door and starting over but I don’t think I’ve got enough upper body strength to do it IRL.

Third, learn to say no or change my number. This one is important. Both of us have a lot of friends with different schedules and loads of fun to be had. Once we get the weekend travel out of the way and get organized and focused, I guess we’re going to have to get a day planner, mark only a handful of days as “out” days and stick to it. Either that or hire a personal assistant. Yeah, one that also cleans and does laundry. That’s it! That’s how you make a new groove… You hire a personal assistant.

Anyone interested? Interns?

The best commercial I’ve seen in a while.

Elite Series LogoGive it up to Kenmore for one of the coolest, short-and-sweet tv spots I’ve seen in a while!

Don’t you wish your laundry room looked like that? Give me some feedback here.  Who thinks this one is good/bad and why?

New beginnings or how I didn’t need sleep anyway.

blogherFor those that don’t already know, I’m leaving J.B. Hunt.  Collective Bias has asked me to be their creative director and you know I can’t pass that one up.  I’ve already begun on some levels and am getting more involved in the start up process every day.  Luckily the guys running the show are giving me all the connections I need to get the resources flowing early so that I can hit the ground at full speed on the 27th of this month.

They’re also including me in this year’s BlogHer after-party called BowlHer.  Look for me with the rest of the Collective Bias group.  I’ll be the loud one.  I preparation, I’ve done some reading:

Enjoy and please post any additional suggestions on surviving an event with 300-400 mom/bloggers for an evening.

Obama wins the Grand Prix!

goBamaNo, this isn’t a motorsports post; I’m actually referring to the Titanium and Integrated Lions the Obama campaign won at Cannes this year. Talk about a change. This puts the Obama campaign at such high regards as those campaigns by Crispin Porter & Bogusky, NYC & Co. and Warner Brothers. Wow. They won the awards for success in community building and willingness to allow the Obama brand to be created by consumers rather than top-down communications mandates (Creativity-Online).

I think my favorite part of all of this is that they won a Lion for the work the general masses did to build the brand. Genius, effective communication by letting the public do the communicating… and we wonder why he won by a landslide.
